Black Naps interviews Alicia James

The Music

Please tell me a little about yourself, your background, your music etc.

I was born in Houston, Texas, but raised in Philadelphia Ms. Now; I am back in Houston, Texas. lol! I love life, my family, and I love music. I can be a really laid back person, and I can also be the loud, irritating person in the room. lol!

How long have you been singing and what makes you most passionate about it?

I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I love music and singing, because it has basically become a part of me. I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t singing. So without it, I don’t know what I would do.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

My biggest inspirations are my family, friends, anything around me that is interesting and moves me emotionally.

What do you think sets yourself apart from other music artists?

Good question. I’m always a little on edge about this question! LOL! I think all artists have that thing that makes them who they are, and makes them just a little different! But, I’m me, and I think that makes me difference. I put my experiences in my music, my sound, and I think that keeps my music unique!

The Hair

How long have you been natural?

I have been fully natural for a little over 2 ½ years

Did you transition, big chop, or were you always natural?

I transitioned for almost an entire year and then I big chopped!

Would you ever go back to a relaxer?

Ummm? noooooo!

What made you want to go natural?

Honestly, I didn’t know anything about going natural. I just knew my hair was falling out my head. I knew that I could no longer put those chemicals in my hair. Before I knew it, I was cutting my relaxed ends off!

What was your relaxer experience like?

I was horrible with relaxers once I turned about 15 and was responsible for my own hair. I would put it in sometimes twice a month. My hair was so damaged.

You have very long healthy natural hair, what do you do that you think has kept it so healthy?

At first, I felt like my hair had grown, and then once I discovered twist outs, braid outs, and all of the great hairstyles, I started doing a lot to my hair. I noticed my hair was not growing much at this time. Finally I discovered protective styles, and learned to be more gentle with my hair, drink plenty of water, and keep my hair moisturized, my hair took off. My big motto is keeping it SIMPLE.

What are you favorite products?

Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Cantu Shea Butter is a must have.

What would you say are the keys to maintaining long hair?

Protective styling is my key, moisture, being gentle, and keeping it simple.

How do you detangle your hair?

I detangle my hair, when it is wet. I add oil, and conditioner. I also use a wide tooth comb

What are your favorite styling tools?

My favorite styling tools?. Hair pins! LOL!

What do you think of the phrase “good hair“?

Healthy hair is good hair!

What do you think when someone says they do not think they would look right with natural hair? I try not to really concern myself with someone else’s hair. If they are not comfortable with having natural hair and they love what they have then that’s great for them! I love my natural hair and I think it is great for me!!!

What advice do you have for someone considering going natural?

My biggest advice would be patient. You’re going to have great hair days, and you are going to have horrible hair days. LOL! It just takes getting use to, and developing a routine that works for you and your hair. Also, keep it simple. There are a lot of products and things to do to your hair, but the less you do to your hair, the more it will grow!

Agreed, ladies stop picking in your hair!!! Leave it alone!
