Ms. Nu’s Spotlight
BlackNaps is excited to feature lovely locked inspiration Ms. Nu! Her pictures are absolutely fabulous and I am really estatic that she decided to share her natural hair journey with us. These photos remind me of my locked days, ah good times! Her curl definition is totally rockin and her pictures show how versatile as well as stylish locs can be.
Tell me a little about the history of your hair?
Growing up I always had long thick and not-so-easy to maintain hair. To top it all off, I was (and still am) extremely tender-headed. So, my mother began “relaxing” my hair at a very young age. My family and friends would always tell me how long and beautiful my hair was and how I should never cut it. I was raised primarily in the North End of Hartford, CT which has a huge West Indian populations and I always absolutely adored the Rastafarian culture and community. I thought locs were amazingly beautiful and wanted to “partake in the glory” of the loc’d life, so to speak. Ultimately, when I finally attended college in D.C. (Howard University) and got away from everyone telling me how I shouldn’t ever cut my hair I took the plunge and cut all of my hair off. It was one of the most freeing experiences of my life.
How would you describe your relaxer experience in a nutshell?
Compared to having natural hair, having a perm was like being in a stinky prison that always made my hair break off and fall out.
What made you choose the loc type that you have over any other types of locs ?
I chose to have cultivated locs because I felt that they would be easier to maintain and be creative with.
How long have you had your locs?
I will have had my locs for 10 years in February.
What method do you use to maintain them (ex: Palm rolling, latch hook, twisting) ?
I palm roll the roots of my locs for maintenance.
Your loc routine?
I wash and palm roll my locs once a month. Between washes I maintain moisture by using extra virgin olive oil on my scalp.
What are your favorite products?
I prefer to use all natural products on my hair like Taliah Waajid products, olive oil and aloe butter.
Do you feel that your locs are versatile? Why?
My locs are extremely versatile. I can curl them, twist them, braid them, corn row them, wear them long, wear them short…I can even rock an afro puff with them if I want to get extra funkalicious.
Have you gotten more compliments on your natural hair or more on your relaxed?
I have received more compliments with my hair being natural. It’s crazy but most people are amazed that this is all my hair. Believe it or not many people can’t believe that my hair is not extensions.
Any advice for those considering your loc choice?
I would say, make sure that you are ready for the loc’d lifestyle. When you have locs it’s so much more than a “hair style” it’s a movement, a lifestyle, a journey. Be prepared.
