Cia’s Natural Diva Spotlight

Tell me a little about the history of your  natural hair?

Toni (my hair) and I go way back like Kit Kats! Of course I was born with her but I did damage her my freshmen year of high school. I gave into the chemical world and relaxed her!

What made you want to go natural?

Going Natural was a big step for me to change the perspective and outlook I had on life. I was struggling with personal self identity issues and my hair definitely played a big part. I believed my hair made me beautiful and boy was I wrong. The only thing that made me beautiful was me and going natural helped me accept the real me more.

Have you had relaxers before? If so, what was that experience like?

Yes I have had a relaxer but I was never satisfied with the outcome. I always ended up flat ironing my hair because the relaxer never really took well to my hair.

What is your hair care routine?
I don’t really have a set routine right now but what I can say is that I do moisturize my hair every day and try to deep condition at least once a week.

What techniques work best for you when styling your hair? (ex. twists outs, Bantu knots, braid outs)
Right now twist outs are the best technique for me. I really suck at braiding my own hair but I am getting better at it. If I don’t do twist outs a usually rock my puff!

What are your favorite hair care products?
I love any and every product from the Shea Moisture hair care line!!! Especially the curling smoothie.

How is the natural hair scene where you live?
I am currently in college but there are a few rising naturals and when we do bump into each other, low and behold the topic is hair!

Do your family, friends, or significant others embrace your natural style?
My parents..ughhh? let’s just say I constantly hear, “I miss your hair”. My boyfriend is the only one who really makes me feel as if my hair is fine. Now he may be saying this because he loves me or it may be because he really thinks so. Nevertheless I believe that opinions are fine but at the end of the day it’s all about what I think!

When you first began your natural hair journey are there any mistakes that you made with your hair that you would suggest others avoid?
I wouldn’t call it a mistake, but I did dye my hair, and I would tell anyone that goes natural to probably avoid chemicals of any sort. Chemicals can usually overly dry your hair.

What advice would you offer to those who are considering going natural or are newly natural?
Know what you are, who you are and what you do! Whatever you do, make sure that at the end of the day you can look in the mirror and say well done. Your hair is merely a part of your beautiful being.
