If you look at any of the infamous society-based classification systems, there is some aspect of discrimination or some people who inherently feel that they're better than others within those systems. However, this isn't true unanimously. So, if you're asking specifically about the "natural hair community" in general - I would respond with a resounding "no". However, there are some women, blogs and forums within the community that openly disapprove of women who don't have natural hair. In my opinion, this impacts as a form of classification (or discrimination) to the person being impacted, even if it's done discretely and indirectly.

I was the same way when I cut my hair off. Actually, at the time, I had my boyfriend help me (now husband). I was crying when I was just about to get started, but as he was cutting, I started to get excited, and then I was really happy. He supported me during my transition, even though my own parents called me crazy.

I feel like if you're going to sport your natural hair, you HAVE to have self confidence. There are way to many nay-sayers out there that usually tries to bring you down. But you always have to remind yourself why you wanted to go natural in the first place. For me, it was feeling like I didn't want to relax anymore. I didn't like the process, and I wanted to be just me--100% me.

It's a shame that something as simple as hair can divide a group a women. I hope that regardless of what a woman decides to do with her hair, that she's okay with her decision. I think there are hair snobs on both sides of the isle, and it's sometimes coming from a person who just newly converted. The women who I encountered who have been natural for years couldn't care less how you do you hair.

Overall, I love my locs and get a lot of questions regarding it. But I always say the same thing, it's a journey. You don't have to love it all the time, but you should remind yourself why you're on it.

No problem Lisa, love your site and the info that you provide. Couldn't agree more and the main reason why women choose to relax as you mentioned in your video is manageability not low self esteem. I know I was trying to convince my mom to go natural and the only reason why she doesn't want to is the care that is required to maintain natural hair.

Thanks for the link, Ari. I really think it's a shame that our hair choices often divide us. I've seen it happen both on the relaxed and natural sides and it's really a shame. Whether or not someone has low self esteem or not is really not my business and we should all feel free to wear our hair the way we want without needing to defend it.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was looking for a way to wear a bun, but still have some fullness going on, and this video tutorial was very helpful

Sock buns and cinnabuns are my protective style of choice for my medium length, afro-textured hair. They're beautiful, quick and easy (to style, take down and detangle afterward). Here are some YouTube tutorials:

Some naturals are bougie abt their choice, other's come off that way as a defense mechanism. I will admit that I've had some pple question me about my hair and because of what I know abt their choices/beliefs (not being able to walk out of the house w/o a weave or refusing to believe I have curly hair and am not mixed) I will say things that sound as if I'm bougie. I don't intend to be that way but when a friend who can't be seen w/o a wig tells me that my hair looks like a jheri curl or texturizer, I will say something to the affect of "At least I'm not stuck on wearing some fake hair while perming what's left of my hair into extinction." Aside from that, each person has a personal choice and to berate one for not making the choice you make is ridiculous.

Are there naturals snobs? Of course. Just like I'm sure there are relaxed snobs. I'm natural and I don't feel it's my job to convert everyone to being relaxer free. I also don't look down on those who use chemicals. Heck, weren't most of us once in that position?

And it's interesting how Don Imus says something and all he** breaks loose, but when Nicki says it it's alright. You said you didn't agree with the statement but still bump her music. That seems like support to me.

Bougie!? No, I don't think so. Black women receive so much hate no matter what we do, hair, clothes, makeup,Attitude. At some point we have all felt our confidence waiver. Women who are natural face Extra Criticism everyday from everyone, parents,friends,strangers...So IF a Natural Head comes off as Bougie, its not because she looks down on "Permies" I think its because she is Proud of her decision and confident in what NATURALLY grows from her Scalp..Head Held High!
