oils for hair
Maintaining healthy natural hair doesn’t require you to purchase all those fancy products from the hair care store.  Some of the best hair care products can be found at the grocery store or the whole foods store.  I have used each of these oils and they work wonders in maintaining shine and making my hair soft.  So, if you want to save some money while strengthening and shining your hair, try one or more of these natural oils.

Avocado Oil

Avocado Oil is particularly great for natural hair. It’s loaded with nutrients, amino acids, essential fatty acids, as well as vitamins A, B, D, and E. And it’s excellent for moisturizing, deep conditioning, improving hair strength, strengthening hair, and boosting shine.Avocado oil is a rich source of Lecithin which gives it good penetrative qualities. It works better when blended with other oils like almond or olive oil, which are also very good for hair care. The various benefits of avocado oil for hair care can be enjoyed in a number of ways.

Castor Oil

Castor Oil thickens hair, promotes hair growth, prevents thinning, moisturizes, helps reduce split ends, helps to tame frizz, and prevents scalp infections. It is high in ricinoleic acid.  This acid is a very effective natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent.  This can help keep any fungus or bacteria from inhibiting hair growth.  Since the oil is also very thick, it may help to prevent hair loss simply by helping to coat the hair and protect it from falling out.

Castor oil is also high in omega 9 fatty acids, which are nourishing to both the hair and the follicle, as well as the surrounding skin.  Castor oil has a unique ability to be deeply penetrating, and this helps it to deliver its nourishment deeply into the pores and the follicles that produce hair.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is great for preventing dandruff, promoting hair growth, moisturizing, strengthening hair, thickening hair, and preventing damage.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is WONDERFUL!! It is sometimes referred to as the “godmother of hair oil,” is great for moisturizing, deep conditioning, improving hair strength, eliminating dandruff, and also has powerful antioxidants that can help fight hair loss.  Olive oil contains vitamin E which, when applied to the scalp, can stimulate hair follicles leading to growth. Vitamin E also fortifies hair, increases hair volume, and prevents premature graying. Olive oil is one of the few carrier oils that can penetrate the hair shaft to promote hair that is soft and shiny. It’s ability to do these things is the reason so many conditioners contain the popular oil.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary Oil stimulates hair follicles and growth by increasing blood circulation to the scalp (like lavender) thus improving delivery of oxygen and nutrients.  It soothes dry flaky scalps and can help with dandruff issues (anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory).

Sweet Almond Oil works great as a “sealant.” This means that it “locks-in” moisture. It also nourishes hair, smoothes hair cuticles to control shedding, promotes hair growth and thickness, prevents hair loss, and boosts shine.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil contains vitamin E, linoleic acid, proteins, and minerals that nourish the hair and scalp almost instantly after the oil is topically applied. In general, your hair is more likely to grow faster and stronger if it is provided with enough supply of vitamin E and other important nutrients.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a natural “balancer” so it is good for all skin and hair types. Its chemical complex is similar to our skin’s sebum. It reaches deep into the pores to remove excess sebum and other impurities. It also hydrates hair from the inside out.  Jojoba oil can be used as a preventative measure against hair breakage. It locks in moisture and secures the hair cuticle.

Canola Oil

Yep! Canola Oil –that stuff you fry your food in.  It has been known as a great hot oil hair treatment and can be a great treatment to combat dryness, split ends and breakage. While over the counter hair treatments can be very expensive, inexpensive canola oil can serve as a basic ingredient for homemade dry hair remedies.

  1. Please research the extraction process of Canola oil and allergic reactions. This is a highly toxic poisonous oil that is not suitable for consumption or use on the body.
