Tips for the Braiding Salon

Have a good experience each time you decide to go to the braiding salon. To ensure that your visit goes well here are some tips:

box-braid-extensions-at-braiding-salong1. Have a photo of the style that you want on your phone or printed out. Showing someone what you are looking for is way easier than trying to describe it.

2. Bring your own comb/styling tools. You don’t want to end up in a situation where someone is attempting to detangle your hair with a small tooth comb or even worse a comb that has been used own multiple heads. Keep in mind often times braiding shops do not always necessarily specialize in caring for hair, but rather styling it.

3. Equip yourself with the handy spray bottle. You can simply have it filled with water or your own personal detangling solution. Either way this will make it easier for your stylist to get through your hair. Luckily, upon my recent visit I had a stylist that worked with clients with natural hair before and she used the spray bottle before detangling my hair to add some slip. However, every salon is not going to be so well versed at this, (I’ve experienced this myself ) so it’s best that you come prepared.

4. Don’t be afraid to tell them if something is too tight or if they are pulling too tightly at your edges. You are paying them at least a $100 bucks or more of your hard earned money in most cases, so there is nothing wrong with politely telling them that there is too much tension being applied. While the styles that were being created around me look great, I couldn’t help but notice how many women that were getting their hair done had badly thinning edges and breakage. This is most likely due to consistently wearing braids without giving the hair a rest and simply having the hair being pulled way too tightly. So, don’t be afraid to speak up, it’s your hair!

  1. I especially like your second tip where you note some braiding salons are not specialized for caring for hair, but styling it. I’ve had to learn from my past experiences. Thanks for sharing with others!
