8 Black Owned Natural Hair Product Businesses You Should Know

One of the most amazing things that has been a part of the natural hair movement, is the surge of black owned natural hair product lines. These businesses were created to solve a problem in the market place – a lack of products that catered to women and men who wanted to wear their afro-textured hair as is. Remember when ‘ethnic hair care’ used to be one shelf on a small section of the hair care aisle of your favorite store? Oh, how the times have changed!

Several black owned natural hair care brands like Taliah Waajid, Carol’s Daughter, Jane Carter Solutions, Camille Rose, Oyin Handmade, Miss  Jessie’s, EDEN BodyWorks, Karen’s Body Beautiful, SheaMoisture, TGIN, and Alikay Naturals can all be found in the aisles of your Walmart, Target, Sallys and Walgreens. But there are several black owned natural hair product businesses you should know about that haven’t hit your major chain stores…yet.  Here are a few you should get to know!

Qhemet Biologics creates high quality hair care products for conscientious naturals and anyone who desires healthy hair and a healthy scalp. The Amla & Olive Heavy Cream is the top selling product, and their Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee and
Burdock Root Butter Cream are also very popular. Qhemet Biologics products are now available at Sephora.

Wondercurl. Wondercurl‘s founder Scarlett got started not just to provide hair care information, but to make styling curly hair more simple and streamlined. The Get Set Hair Jelly and Butter than Love Pudding are some of her most popular products. Wonder curl products are retailed in boutiques, beauty supply stores and markets all over the United States, Caribbean, and Canada. Read more about how Wondercurl got started.

OBIA Natural Hair. What separates OBIA Natural Hair Care, founded in 2012, from other companies is that the founder and formulator, Obia Ewah, is a trained chemist. My absolute favorites are the Curl Moisture Cream, Twist Whip Butter, and Babassu Deep Conditioner, which are OBIA’s top sellers. OBIA Natural Hair Care promotes recycling and are a part of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Read more about how OBIA Natural Hair got started.

Tree Naturals, an all natural hair and body product line with an Asian influence, was founded by LaTresha Sayles in 2011. Her best sellers are the Green Tea & Coconut Conditioner Bar, Rice Flower & Shea Leave-In Conditioner, which is hands down one of my holy grail must-haves, Whipped Curl Creme, and Natasha’s Growth Butter. This product line even includes a men’s hair and beard care line. Read more about how Tree Naturals got started.

It’s Yours Hair Co. It’s Yours Hair Co was founded by Shawne Morgan in 2001, and not only provides premium hair extension, but also products to care for natural hair whether you’re rocking extensions, your natural hair or transitioning. Some of her most raved about products are the Curl hair extensions, and the Twist & Curl Cream which is a personal favorite of mine. Her product line includes everything you need to care for your hair from cleansing and conditioning to styling and profiling. Read more about how It’s Your Hair got started.

There are just so many amazing black owned natural hair care product businesses out there. These are just some of my favorite ones, but I’m sure there are lots more that I don’t even know about.

Tell me if any of these brands are on your holy grail list, or if there’s a brand out there that I missed. We’d love to hear about it!
