How To Keep Your Natural Hair From Breaking Your Face Out

Natural Hair and Skin CareIf you have acne prone skin, having natural hair can definitely exacerbate any acne-related issues you’re having with your skin. Acne occurs when your sebaceous glands become clogged, usually with oil, dirt, and/or dead skin cells, which blocks the follicle and causes acne to form.

Oil and residue from the natural hair products you use can easily increase pimples on acne prone skin if you aren’t careful. I understand the struggle because I myself have had acne for years. When I went natural, I was constantly getting breakouts as my skin became affected by the products I was using. I finally found a regimen that works for my skin and has prevented me from breaking out (as long as I remain consistent!)

Here are some ways to avoid a horrible breakout from the products you use on your natural hair:

1. Wash your face before styling.

If you have on any makeup or have particularly oily skin, it’s a good idea to wash your face before you start styling your hair. This way, you’ll have a clean slate to start on before you begin. If you style your hair with a face full of makeup, oil, or sweat, you’ll only be adding on top of that, which will further clog your pores and won’t be good at all for your skin.

My favorite cleanser to use after removing my makeup is the Biore Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser, which has definitely become my holy grail cleanser over the last couple of months. It does a great job at really penetrating my pores and removing all of the dirt, oil, makeup, and sweat.

Charcoal has been popular in facial cleansers lately because it fights breakouts, sops up oil, and purifies the skin of pollutants. Another favorite of mine is the Freeman Feeling Beautiful Charcoal & Black Sugar Polishing Mask. I can only use this once or twice a week because it’s on the gritty side but has given me softer, more glowy skin since I started using it earlier this year.

2. Wash your face immediately after styling.

Even though natural hair styling sessions can be super exhausting at times, it’s important to take a few minutes and wash your face immediately afterwards. It’s very likely that some of the products you used landed on your face, so cleansing will remove any oil or harmful ingredients from your skin. Keep in mind that just because a product is great for your hair doesn’t mean that it won’t be potentially harmful to your skin.

If you washed your face with an exfoliating cleanser before washing, a gentle cleanser will do the job. I like the Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Facial Cleanser. It’s intensive but also super gentle at the same time, which my skin loves.

I like to follow up with the Avalon Organics Vitamin C Balancing Facial Toner. Toner is amazing for acne prone skin because it helps minimize your pores, fade scars, further remove dirt/oil, and balance your skin tone. Another one of my favorite toners is the Clean and Clear Deep Cleansing Astringent for Sensitive Skin. I alternate between the two throughout the week.

3. Use a mask 2-3 times a week.

Masks are great for oily, acne prone skin because they clear away built up oil and help control shine. Plus, they help bring any bumps lingering under the surface up to the forefront. My favorite is the Neutrogena Deep Clean Long Last Shine Control Cleanser/Mask. This mask is so amazing that I use it daily. After styling my hair and cleansing my face, I always use this mask in order to keep my skin in check. I’ve found that my breakouts have decreased tremendously. In fact, I only get acne now if I slack on my routine.

4. Keep it simple.

There are so many products out there (for your hair AND your skin), but it’s best to just make sure that you keep it simple. It’s fun to try out new products but ultimately, your skin will benefit the most from a consistent routine. That means that sometimes, less is more than you might think.

If you find that a hair product is harmful to your skin, it’s not worth using unless you can find a way to prevent it from touching your skin. Try to never touch your face when styling your hair and wear your hair in a way that it won’t be irritating to your face.

  1. Im a bit confused though because my hair is breaking , over processed, and just damaged and dry. Its summer now so its even more dry. My question is how can you keep the products in your hair from just melting on to your skin?

    1. If your hair is really damaged I highly recommend getting a trim. Make sure you are using water or a water based product to moisturize and a oil to seal the moisture in.

  2. I’m pleasantly surprised that since going natural. my skin has improved immensely. I thought I was going to have problems with my extremely acne prone skin but I think because of the higher water intake, increased frequency of washing/wetting my hair and overall healthier lifestyle my skin is the clearest it been in 20 years. I do avoid overly greasy feeling products and always wash or wipe off my face after styling as suggested. I use jojoba oil for my hair and skin and have had excellent results.
