Q. How long have you been natural?
A. I have been technically natural since birth because I have never had a perm. However I did not fully embrace my natural curl pattern until 2006. That is when I stopped using heat on my hair.
Q. Why did you decide to go natural?
A. I decided to go natural when I noticed how thin my hair was becoming. Now mind you my hair is naturally thin however when it is flat ironed it was VERY thin and lacked body and volume. I also started to lose length due to the constant heat styling. My hair basically started to break off at the tips and become terribly uneven. So at this point I started to go to the beauty shop and gradually cut off the dead ends until basically all the heat damage I had created was gone.
Q. What are your favorite go to styles?
A. My favorite go to style is a top knot bun. It is super easy to achieve and is a life saver when attempted hairstyles fail. My next go to style is a half up half down style. My hair is currently not layered so it falls in my face when I wear my wash n go’s (which is often). So I pin the front part of my hair back mainly out of convenience but it grew on me as a style that I love.
Q. What are your favorite products?
A. My favorite products are:
*Giovanni Tea tree triple treat
*Mane and Tail Conditioner
*Mielle Organics White Peony Leave in Conditioner
*DevaCurl Supercream Coconut Curl Styler
*Carol’s Daughter Monoi Deep Conditioner
*Mielle Organics Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner
Q. What is your advice to the newly natural?
A. My advice to new naturals is very simple, learn your hair and learn what works for your hair. I spent at least two years trying out products that matched my hair type (3b, 3c) instead of learning about every aspect of my own hair. You have to learn about your hair porosity in my opinion, that is the biggest mistake that a lot of new naturals make. I know I did and I spent a lot of unnecessary money.
