With my sensitive scalp, I am always looking for natural alternatives to products in my regular hair care regime. Rice water is one of those alternatives and it is packed full of amazing benefits for both skin and hair. Rice water has been used for centuries in East Asian countries to keep their skin looking young and their hair healthy and strong. Why is rice water so beneficial? It’s because it is full of vitamins and amino acids that are essential for beautiful, healthy hair and skin like ferulic acid, an antioxidant and allantoin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Here are some benefits to rice water rinses and the different methods you can use to create your own rice water.
Thickens and Strengthens hair
Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is important in the growth of cells and tissue. It helps to thicken and strengthen the hair as well as stimulating hair growth. Using rice water will allow your hair and scalp to absorb the vitamin topically.
Good for blood circulation
Niacin, or vitamin B3, revitalizes dull weak hair by improving blood circulation. This repairs the hair follicles and reduces inflammation.
Promotes hair growth
Along with folic acid and selenium, magnesium also promotes hair growth. In fact, every single cell in our body needs magnesium because it makes sure our cells are functioning properly. It also helps dissolve calcium build up on the hair from hard water, uncovering the follicle so the hair can grow.
Inositol increases hair elasticity making the hair stronger and more flexible. Increased flexibility helps to create a more defined curl pattern and bouncy curls.
Allantoin has anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps in reducing inflammation in the scalp and increases elasticity in the hair follicles.
Protects from hair loss
There is a connection between stress and hair loss. Thiamin, or vitamin B1, helps the body deal with stress. This can lead to a reverse in hair loss while giving your hair shine and bounce.
No-boil quick method
If you don’t have time for the fermented method there is a quicker way to get your rice water. Just add 1/2 cups of rice to two cups of water and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Strain the rice and you can use it right away.
Fermented rice water is the most potent and effective method for creating your rinse. This is because of the pH change that occurs during the fermentation process. Fermenting the rice water helps to bring its pH closer to your hair’s natural pH and a chemical, Pitera, is released that can promote cell regeneration.
