Embracing Your TWA: Quick Guide To Caring for Short Tresses

TWA

Many of us naturals began our natural hair journey with a TWA.  For the newbies, a TWA is a Teeny Weeny Afro; a frustrating phase for some new naturals.  Natural divas may become frustrated with their TWA after running out of style ideas, hitting hair maintenance road blocks, and/or frustrated with trying to determine your curl pattern.  Here are a few ways to maintain your TWA without the frustration.

1. Moisturize Daily

Just because your hair is short does not mean to neglect it.  At this point, hair is driest and needs daily moisture. Make sure to moisturize your hair, paying special attention to the ends–then seal in the moisture.  Additionally, make sure to cover your TWA with a silk/satin bonnet before going to bed, or cover your pillows with satin pillow cases.coconut_oil

2. Co-Wash or Clarify Wash

Regardless of what you do, your hair must be washed.  Co-washes are great for the TWA in that it a great source of moisture.   Remember though that co-washing may cause a build up on the scalp, and that you must shampoo with a sulfate free shampoo every so often.

3. Your TWA Can Be Styled

Your hair is short, so what!? Don’t limit yourself and be creative.  Short hair does not mean no style!  From finger shingling, to short twist outs, to bantu knots, you have a plethora of style choices!

4. Accessorize

Adding accessories can really spice up your TWA.  Ribbons, bows, scarves, barrette, etc. can really compliment your TWA (and your outfit)!   The wildest twist-out can look fabulous with you accessorize!

The TWA phase is a unique and beautiful one.  Embrace it and be beautiful!
