Dandruff can really be a downer, especially when everything else about your appearance is on point. Seeing dandruff on your clothes – and worse yet – in your hair – can make you feel less than your best and can lower your self-esteem and self-confidence. 1. Avoid products that are very drying and that contain high percentages of alcohol.

I know that many people feel that “fatty alcohols” are okay to use, but over time, they are still very drying and should be used very sparingly. 2. Use products and cleansers that have antibacterial properties.
With a little effort, you can find shampoos or cleansers that focus on removing dandruff and stimulating the scalp simultaneously. A good choice: Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo. This organic shampoo contains tea tree oil, an amazing antibacterial agent that is known to increase blood circulation to the skin while killing bacteria. And it really does tingle – you can feel it doing its job. The price is pretty nice too – only $4 at your local Trader Joe’s store.
3. Do hot oil treatments that incorporate tea tree oil.
For instance, if you are in love with coconut oil, add a free drops of tea tree oil to it or any other carrier oil that you like. I prefer coconut oil due to the fact that it offers intense penetration into the shaft of the hair and into the skin. At any rate, apply the oil mixture to the scalp and do a scalp massage utilizing circular motions before wrapping your head in a plastic cap, and then wrap the head with a towel. Allow the oils to penetrate the scalp for 30 mins to an hour and then shampoo. Follow up with a low-alcohol conditioner and proceed with styling. This procedure should be repeated weekly until you see improvement with the dandruff situation. A good time frame is about once every week for 3-4 weeks.
3. Avoid using mineral oil and petroleum based products.
These items repel moisture and are synthetically produced. Need I say more?
4. Avoid using your fingernails to scratch an itchy scalp.
Fingernails transfer bacteria and make dandruff and psoriasis problems even worse. Instead, reach for a rat-tail comb to scratch those irritating itches!
